Schizophrenia Treatment

Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally. Schizophrenia may result in some combination of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behavior that impairs daily functioning, and can be disabling.

People with schizophrenia require lifelong treatment. Early treatment in Health Republic may help get symptoms under control before serious complications develop and may help improve the long-term outlook.

Symptoms of Schizophrenia

The condition may develop slowly. The first signs can be hard to identify as they often develop during the teenage years.

Symptoms such as becoming socially withdrawn and unresponsive or changes in sleeping patterns can be mistaken for an adolescent “phase”.

People often have episodes of schizophrenia, during which their symptoms are particularly severe, followed by periods where they experience few or no symptoms. This is known as acute schizophrenia.

  • Positive symptoms: Hallucinations, such as hearing voices, paranoid delusions, and exaggerated or distorted perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors.
  • Negative symptoms: A loss or a decrease in the ability to initiate plans, speak, express emotion, or find pleasure.
  • Disorganization symptoms: Confused and disordered thinking and speech, trouble with logical thinking, and sometimes bizarre behavior or abnormal movements.
  • Impaired cognition: Problems with attention, concentration, memory and declining educational performance.

Causes of Schizophrenia

The main symptoms of bipolar disorder are alternating episodes of extreme euphoria, or mania, and major depression. The fluctuations can be severe, but moods may be normal between the peaks and troughs. The mood shifts involved in bipolar disorder are far more severe, debilitating, and incapacitating than those experienced by most people.

The exact causes of schizophrenia are unknown. Research suggests a combination of physical, genetic, psychological and environmental factors can make a person more likely to develop the condition.

Some people may be prone to schizophrenia, and a stressful or emotional life event might trigger a psychotic episode. However, it’s not known why some people develop symptoms while others do not.

Some studies have shown that people with bipolar disorder may have enhanced creativity. However, changes in mood can make it hard to sustain attention to projects or follow through with plans, resulting in the person having a lot of projects started, but nothing finished.

Complications of Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia can result in severe problems that affect every area of life. Complications that schizophrenia may cause or be associated with include:

  • Suicide, suicide attempts and thoughts of suicide
    Self-injury
  • Anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Depression
  • Abuse of alcohol or other drugs, including tobacco
  • Inability to work or attend school
  • Legal and financial problems and homelessness
  • Social isolation
  • Health and medical problems
  • Being victimized
  • Aggressive behavior, although it’s uncommon

Treatment of Schizophrenia

Treatment can help many people with schizophrenia lead highly productive and rewarding lives. After the symptoms of schizophrenia are controlled, various types of therapy can continue to help people manage the illness and improve their lives. Therapy and supports can help people learn social skills, cope with stress, identify early warning signs of relapse and prolong periods of remission. Because schizophrenia typically strikes in early adulthood, individuals with the disorder often benefit from rehabilitation to help develop life-management skills. At Heath Republic, we manage all the protocols for the schizophrenia patient with the help of top experienced consultants around the Pakistan.
